Streetwise Language Live- Learning Language through Drama

“A voyage of constant discovery and challenge” (Sarit Chen, trainee)

IEA’s social enterprise Streetwise Language Live is a unique programme modeled on the French ESF-funded partnership Cimad and Theatre du Soleil. Its aim is to enhance the integration and English learning experience of asylum seekers through the beautiful art of drama.

SLL drama workshops

A series of drama workshops, which take place at the St Mary Magdalene Centre for Refugees and Asylum Seekers, have been designed to teach asylum seekers English in a playful way. They are constantly learning and improving but it does not feel like work. It feels like fun.

The workshop sessions encourage the students to be proud of their achievements, to gain more confidence in using the English language in their local community and to feel good about themselves in a safe environment.

The programme is part- funded by the European Social Fund’s Equal programme as part of the Empowering Asylum Seekers to Integrate (EASI) partnership.

SLL training programme

The training of four drama facilitator trainees is one of the features that makes the programme truly distinctive. Under the guidance of a professional drama therapist and actor, these trainees deliver the drama workshops every week.

SLL training manual

An exciting product of the programme will be an interactive workshop manual written by Noel McDermott. This manual serves the purpose of providing valuable knowledge gained from the Streetwise Language Live Programme as well as theory and practical workshop exercises for budding drama facilitators and English language teachers.

The manual launch and the theatre premiere will take place on 13th December in a London theatre and we are sure it will be a successful and inspiring celebration.
